Pengyuan Xiu was selected to present his work as a finalist in the Generation IV International Forum “Pitch your Gen IV Research” competition for junior researchers. The competition is for PhD students who are working on research related to Gen IV nuclear reactor concepts.

Congratulations to Matt Lynch for being selected as an awardee for the 2021 NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunities (NSTGRO21) researcher. The proposal was titled, “Additively manufactured self-repairing Ni metal composite through high aspect ratio pathways” and will look at novel techniques to develop high sink strength Ni-based alloys for nuclear power and propulsion.

Congratulations to Pengyuan Xiu for winning the Towner Prize for the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Department. The award is presented to an outstanding graduate student in each degree program and determined based on the awardee’s active participation in research, leadership, and academic performance.

Prof. Field has been been awarded funding for research as part of a joint proposal with Theia Scientific, LLC to the SBIR Phase I Release 1 program within the U.S. Department of Energy - Office of Science.

NOME welcomes two new faces, Ms. Mackenzie Warwick and Dr. Priyam Patki, to the group! Mackenzie joins NOME as a graduate student with a BSE in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences from the University of Michigan.

The U.S. Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) initiative presented NOME lab graduate student, Kelsy Green, with the Best Poster Award as part of their annual U.S. C3E Symposium. The poster, titled “Radiation Tolerant Materials for Advanced Nuclear Reactors”, discusses her on-going research into the use of advanced manufacturing techniques to tailor the microstructures of advanced steels for high dose applications in nuclear power plants.

Prof. Field co-authored two new papers this Fall: A paper providing the first details on a novel additively manufactured nanostructured alloy (ANA) tied to NOME’s ongoing project on precipitate stability in advanced steels.

Congratulations to Pengyuan Xiu for publishing his first author paper titled, “STEM Characterization of Dislocation Loops in Irradiated FCC Alloys” which was published in the Journal of Nuclear Materials in November 2020.

Prof. Field welcomed his second child and first son on October 23 at 2:50 am. His new son, Noah, joins his daughter, Madison, as honorary group members. Please help us in welcoming Noah to the world and the group!

Prof. Field has been been awarded funding for research as part of a joint proposal with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to the GAMOW program within the U.S. Department of ARPA-E program.
